Samsung released a handful of budget Android smartphones last year in India. The Samsung Galaxy J5 was one of these budget friendly smartphones with support for India’s 4G LTE bands. The brand had also invested in Tizen operating system to bring new devices to compete against entry-level Android and Windows Phone smartphones in the emerging markets. The company introduced its first Tizen OS-powered handset called the Z1 in early 2015, which had been a successful offering since the brand claimed to have sold more than one million units of the handset within six months of its launch. The company in October introduced its new Tizen smartphone called the Z3 in the country, which is also a value-for-money device.
If you are planning for a budget smartphone from Samsung, but don’t mind the operating system, the Galaxy J5 and Z3 are among the best devices. Let’s compare their specifications to help you choose better.
Samsung Z3 vs Samsung Galaxy J5: features comparison
The Samsung Z3’s design is typical Samsung, but it comes with squared corners compared to the rounded corners on the company’s Android devices. The phone feels good in hand for the asking price, but comes with the same plastic polycarbonate build profile we’ve seen in many Galaxy devices over the years. It measures 7.9mm around the waist, and weighs 137 grams. The Galaxy J5 on the other hand offers plastic body with chrome finish edges. It has a waistline of 8.5mm and weighs 149 grams. Overall, design-wise, the Samsung Z3 looks more appealing than the Galaxy J5.
Display and OS
The Samsung Galaxy J5 and Z3, both the budget smartphones come with 5-inch Super AMOLED displays with screen resolutions of 1,280 x 720 pixels. Thanks to the Super AMOLED screen panels, the displays are vibrant and show deep saturated colour tones. For the software, the Z3 comes with Tizen 2.4, which as per the brand is light on resources, and is light on third party apps as well. However, it has quite a few apps on the Tizen store, compared to Android that has millions of apps. The Galaxy J5 runs Android Lollipop out of the box, but as mentioned above has the advantage of the several third-party applications when compared to the Tizen store of the Z3.
The Galaxy J5 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which is further supported by 1.5GB of RAM and an Adreno 306 GPU. It comes with 8GB of internal memory, which can be further increased by inserting a microSD card. The Samsung Z3 on the other hand is backed by a slightly less powerful 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC7730 processor, aided by 1GB of RAM and a Mali 400 MP2 GPU. It also comes with 8GB of expandable memory.
Coming to the camera features, the Samsung Galaxy J5 comes with a 13-megapixel primary snapper with autofocus, an LED flash and full HD video recording support. For selfies and video calling, the phone offers a 5-megapixel secondary snapper. The Samsung Z3 on the other hand offers a less powerful 8-megapixel primary camera with an LED flash, but gets the same 5-megapixel secondary shooter for selfies.
Connectivity and battery
As far as the connectivity is concerned, the Samsung Galaxy J5 and Samsung Z3, both come with dual-SIM slots, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, micro-USB 2.0, and A-GPS. The Galaxy J5 also gets additional connectivity options including support for Indian 4G LTE networks and USB OTG. They both are powered by 2,600mAh batteries, which deliver a single day of usage on normal charge.
Samsung’s Z3 is a Tizen-OS powered smartphone like Windows Phone in its early days. The OS is pretty good and usable, but lacks the third party applications that the Galaxy J5 has on its Android OS. It is a 3G-only smartphone with an appealing design and decent configuration. The Galaxy J5 on the other hand is a budget 4G LTE-enabled offering with better camera specs, a powerful processor, but is slightly thicker than the Z3. Coming to the prices, the Galaxy J5 is priced higher than the Z3 at Rs 11,999, but brings better perks for the asking price. The Samsung Z3 in India on the other hand is being offered Rs 8,390.
